Friends

Headed out to meet some friends tonight. These ladies have been in my life many years. They've poured wisdom into me, hugged me when I was broken, made me laugh until I cried, and made me a better human being. What else could a girl ask for? Friends can be tricky.  I've gotten invited into some groups I've bowed out of. I've been befriended by some I've stepped away from. I truly believe I should be with those who help my being. Those I know I am safe around. Girls who will tell me the truth but not be snide about it. I am fully aware this does not happen by chance and yet I consider myself lucky and blessed to have not only these ladies but many more (and a few guy friends who've stood by me).

Noel

I really want to wear the teenager's jacket. It would be so comfortable and would match my outfit. But I think if your mother wears your jacket it sends it into no man's land.

Noel- the saddest, weirdest Christmas movie ever. But good. very very good.

Forecast

The pouring rain is so lovely. Let it wash over me, cleanse me, let me start fresh. Last Friday the forecast was crappy but it turned out not so bad and I wondered if this workweek might hold the same hope. It did. Things are rainy but not horrible. We'll survive.

Left

I did not know Sylvester Stalone wrote the screen play for Rocky... that's pretty amazing.

Ways to know you are the mother of a teenage boy... he buys his own car then proceeds to continue shopping for cars to buy for parts....

Hubs and I watched Left Behind last night. Not bad. Not great, acting left some to be desired. I hope they continue to make the rest of the books but I doubt they do.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is many things to many people and I'm sure not all are as rosey as mine. Yesterday as we left our home we drove past families out swinging golf clubs together toward the field across from their farmhouse. Harbor was in the back seat and nearly jumped out of the moving vehicle because he brought a spider in with the mail to sort through. We drove to Bentonville, Ohio to John's cousin's on his mother's side. We walked in not knowing many names and many of the faces not knowing ours. Over 40 people gathered and we ate and talked and sat and napped. John's dad brought the guns, a 22 handgun, 22 rifle, 223 rifle, and we shot at bottles, cans and blew something up. It was quite nice

MIndset

Mindset- I've joined an online book discussion and I wanted to save my thoughts...

Hi there! I'm late to the game. I'm DaShannon Lovin, librarian at Blanchester High School. I work with Stephenie Eriksson, English teacher at BHS, also in this group. I've taken some OWP classes and really enjoyed the experience. I have a son who is a junior and my husband teaches math here at the high school. Chris, The Nightingale is one of our reads for our Staff and Friends Book Club so I hope its a good one! Katie, Boys in the Boat is also on our list. Taylor, Fannie Flagg's Daisy Faye and the Miracle Man is my favorite book of all time. Actually it is hard not to comment on what everyone has read but I need to just stop :) I'm reading Brave New World for a student book club that meets Friday and I just finished The Bell Jar for a classics club. Club meetings keep me on track reading about a book a week to discuss. I've just started Mindset and I'm loving it.

I am definitely the growth mindset with purposeful engagement. I've always been a good student with a passion for learning but I've never felt 'gifted' so I work really hard to improve. I'm goal setter and a list maker always trying to simplify or streamline a process.
The idea that depending on the situation I might be more fixed than growth mindset is intriguing. Reading the book on my own I wouldn't think so but after listening to the discussion I can see that. Math- I feel like I just wasn't born with it, reached my  (low) potential early and now I'm thankful my life and job allow me to use a calculator and ask my math guys for help. But if I practiced might it change? Maybe I just don't like it therefore I'm not interested in growing.
The idea that fixed mindsets are supersensitive and worry about what others judge us to be, well, I feel that but I still just don't feel like I've ever been in the fixed mindset. Growing up feeling like I came from undereducated parents who were from the hills of Kentucky I was afraid of people judging me so I kept quiet and tried to fake my way until I could catch up to where I thought others were. But I always felt like I could improve, that I would overcome what my background had provided. I don't know that I considered genetics or a fixed IQ.
Teaching in high school now I find it interesting that our students have been grouped and labeled coming up in elementary school but then we give them more choices when they get here. If they can get the grade we will allow them to move into honors classes. They can enroll in dual credit or College Credit Plus as long as they take a placement test. More students see college as a possibility.
It's funny how our personal experiences come to mind when we are trying to decide what we want to 'buy' that this author is 'selling'. When I moved back to Ohio, for some reason, this school had a much older teacher population. Smart, funny, savvy and experienced, I found them very intimidating. I go used to being made fun of (in a good way) or taking advice on my teaching, speaking and writing. I learned very quickly that they weren't judging me. We were just doing life together. These people became my life long friends. I became much more open to just putting myself out there, making mistakes and admitting upfront when I had no idea what was going on. It has made me a much better person.

I remember being placed in the advanced readers group in the 3rd grade. I know there was a label (color/animal) but, whatever, you knew which group/level you were anyway. Kids would be moved 'up' or 'down'. From then on I knew I was expected to be above average in school so I strived to prove that. I also think have a sister 3 years ahead of me in school and the fact that she hated school and struggled to fit in from day 1 played into my thinking and my parents thinking about what = success in school. My sister is now a very successful special ed teacher who makes a ridiculous difference in the lives of her students struggling through school.
Now, as a mother, I find it interesting that my son's intellect has been measured more by how well he performs on tests. From early on his teachers, administrators, and, admittedly, his parents have openly talked about how well he performs in front of him. And about the expectation of getting the scores that will = $$ for college and/or recognition for his schools. This is a toughy to read and sort out. I want him to live up to or perform according to his potential yet the pressure has increased with the stakes and I'm uncomfortable with that. I've always told him he was born with abilities and talents the rest of us don't have (fixed) and that he should use those gifts wisely and strive to do his best (growth). But haven't I really said that his mindset is fixed then? Huh. Confusing.
I think as an individual I would like to think that not tracking would work and allow everyone to grow and achieve at their own pace and ability level. But as an educator and a parent I don't think I believe that works best for all kids. Being able to tailor my lesson and the pacing of my lesson works best if like students are grouped together. Again I'm loving the book contents and the discussion boards making me think about these things!

This whole idea that IQ is not fixed but able to grow? Mind blowing. I need to find studies that prove or disprove that. Maybe my idea of what the IQ test tests is just wrong. As far as I know I've never taken it nor has my son. My son has been labeled gifted (not bragging, not even humble bragging just trying to raise a question). School and information in general comes easy to him. I've often wondered if taking the IQ test would be beneficial. What if he tested high? Would he aspire to prove worthy of the number? What if he tested average after being told his 17 years how above average he is? I really thought about this last year as he was faced with the ACT test. Again what if he tested average on a test that = $ for college. My husband and I talked about our scores. I had no idea what my ACT score was (it's a number and I'm not 'good' at those) my husband knew exactly how he scored 20 years ago. So we looked them up.... mine was not great, his was average. I was shocked! I really thought I had done better. Maybe I thought that because I had bought in to what I thought that score meant. Changed my expectations for my son. And sadly my view of myself. Really? After 20 years and numerous degrees I still let those scores and labels define me? Yep.

You didn't make the cut

How do you explain to someone that you needed to make some changes in your life and they didn't make the cut?
There is no one thing just the accumulation of acts that were evidence of an unhealthy relationship. A litany of acts that if said aloud sound petty but when pulled together show a disregard my feelings and I no longer want to participate in the relationship. For years my friends ask why? Why do you allow that to happen? Why are you choosing to spend time with that person who talks to you in such a manner? I've finally decided there is no good answer so I'm choosing not to anymore.

Teachers need more...

I think there's probably a list out there somewhere...
Things teachers can not have too many of.
1- Holiday decorations such as witches' hats or Christmas posters
2- Writing utensils- pens or pencils or markers or crayons. These things grow legs and walk out every time I turn my back.
3- Post it Notes- See #2.

Nov 1st thoughts

When I woke up this morning I had very little plans for the day and at some point I was thinking what a perfect day it was turning out to be... Harbor and I went to Elevation Community Church where I stopped to get a coffee at our church cafe- flavor of the day, Buckeye, made by a young coffee barista who did a fabulous job with a smile- then we filled in at the nursery where 3 teens and 2 adults cared for 7 little tykes-1 the son of 2 former Blan students, I love that. Then we headed to Milford, Harbor driving me (I hate to drive) Panera for lunch, and stopped for an oil change and a few groceries. Then we stopped by Miami Meadows, Harbor threw a few casts out while I read. Wasn't the weather beautiful today? On to the house where he barely made it to the couch and promptly fell asleep as teens are known to do at the drop of a hat while I watched TV/crafted/cruised social media. He had a physical Friday and got a clean bill of health and a geesh that kid is growing from his Dr. Thank the Lord. The dogs stretched out and enjoyed the bones we picked up with the groceries. The only thing missing  was John... then he came in from a fishing tournament and also barely made it to the chair before crashing. I love when we finally all make our way home and everybody gets to relax and recharge for the week ahead. Even if having everyone under the same roof usually means most of us are sleeping at the time I really, really count these moments as sacred time because my boy is now 17.

Bub has picked up the habit of saying I'm sour about....

Still didn't facebook it

I almost posted this Tuesday and then I didn't because sometimes I feel my FB posts sound like I'm bragging. I'm not. So if you read my posts and poo poo me then just unfriend me- no hard feelings. I'm longwinded and thoughtful and I like to throw it out to the world hoping it lands on 'friends' ears. I do know that I am incredibly blessed to work in a profession that is my heartbeat, my ministry, and my passion. We connect with great people- adults and students- everyday. I get to recommend books to them, I get to help them along their way and they help me along mine. I laugh every day at WORK. Everyday. I smile. I am reaffirmed that I am in the right place at the right time. It's rough and discouraging at times, it is, but I am incredibly blessed to live out this life here doing this job with these wonderful people.
So anywho.... Tuesday one of my seniors came in after my announcements and said, I need you. We walked over to the library and she launched into the- I don't know what I should do with my life, how can you expect me to choose what I want to do for the rest of my life, this is too stressful, tell me what to do. Of course I didn't tell her. We talked. I helped her see some options and coping strategies. Mr. Lovin walked in. We went through it all again. Another parent came in. We tried it out on him. I told her to talk to people. See what they say. Consult people in that field and ask how this works in their world. Then she said, OK I'm going to see Mrs. Eriksson. I know you two will be honest with me because you care about me......
Job done. I had to stop myself from tackling her and crying because job done.
I know I could insert many of my coworkers names into a story where a kid connects with a teacher who they know cares. That, my friend, is why I love being a Blanchester Wildcat. It doesn't happen everywhere. Not every school has the support from bosses who care as much about the whole student as the curriculum. One does not thrive without the other.

Safe Place

I'm plotting my NANOWRIMO novel... I think I'll just write everyday, some memoir, some sentence collection from my blog and journals. 15 mins a day just writing.

Guard what you say. You never know who is listening, who they are related to, and who they will repeat it to. You are creating a picture of yourself to those who overhear you.

Provide a safe place... I told Bub this awhile back when he had friends over and now I realize I need to do the same thing for teachers and for students.

So someone has me over a barrel so they treat me like crap. I can't really do much about it so I smile and move on. However I told a colleague and friend the situation and she was outraged. It made me feel so much better. I'm not just being sensitive. Now the person treating me like this can not be confronted so she probably thinks she's getting away with it but what she does not realize is that she did not completely steal my power. People know. They also realize you are the person who knows I can't fight back so you abuse me. So there's that.

Went to Books by the Banks this past weekend. I love being close to the authors. But I feel like if I poured my soul into writing a book, you came up to my table and then walked away I would follow you screaming, " what?!? you don't like it?!?! What don't you like?!?!"

Time flies when I get nothing done...

Listened to a Chip Kidd Ted Talk on clarity and mystery...
Watched 2 episodes of NCIS...

Working in planner and cleaning off studio table...
Burning Flannel & Tweed...
Drinking tea...
Eating leftovers from Homecoming dance...
Cleaning up scrapbooking...
Cleaning off the desk

The boy slept over at a friend's after homecoming. I finally called to tell him he needed to return to me. Then I cooked him a small snack of 7 scrambled eggs. Then Hubs came home from a fishing tournament at Rocky.

FOOOORRRRRR HHHOOOOUUUURRRSSSSS

whoopsie, float building, life

How embarrassing that I've been so lazy and depressed and then I read about Syria. Seriously blessed over here in the US of A and dragging our feet.

Depressed? I guess more like discouraged. Stupid Facebook. People accusing the school of making bank off of students. Seriously? It makes me want to clock in clock out and see how many volunteers you get then. Please just stop people. Not nice. If you have a question ask the right people not Facebook. Negative Nancys are all going to say amen and those of us who know the answers aren't allowed to engage school questions like that on Facebook. Poopy people.

And then there is float building... a great American tradition. Where the parents need to learn to let the kids do something on their own.... Painful to watch but a necessary right of passage.

We tell our kids to behave online and then the parents are the ones out there blasting each other, making accusations instead of having a question and going to the appropriate person to get answers.
I wonder why we can't get volunteers....

This post started days ago but I just keep holding off on posting so LAST DAY!
I put out new bookmarks on Monday and today I noticed they are all gone.. what a rewarding feeling. They weren't even up front; because they were so large I put them in the back of the basket and today I went to get one and they were all gone. Little lovelies found them and helped themselves just as I had intended.

Webinars

Aug 4
Participating in webinars all day today. Should be interesting.

Goodbye September

Today I played in the studio and finished my September cards. I listened to podcasts about Amy Winehouse documentary and one about Do I Sound Gay. Guys who have a 'sound' are classified as gay but do girls have a sound like that?

Yesterday I finished Girl on the Train. Not a favorite. Very Gone Girlish which was also not my favorite. A page turner no doubt but I need to connect more with my books. Even my cozies I need more character in my characters.

BOOK CONVO

I love the anticipation of the students having a book conversation.
I love when I say oh this is sooo much better than the miniseries and he says, 'there's a mini series....'
Oh he wrote that? I thought it was just a movie! I love that movie! What else did he write?
Good talking to you...

I've been down the planner rabbit hole now for almost a year and here's what I know....

behind... no pun intended

I joined Weight Watchers Aug 31. After year's of saying I know what to do and how to eat I just sucked it up and joined. I do know but I overdo it. Often. It was time to get back on the healthy living wagon and drop some luggage. I'm using the point system that I thought was stupid and it's working. So there's that. It will be 2 weeks on Monday and I don't mind eating a little of what I want and stopping at that. I don't mind eating the salads for lunch and the diet soda. I'm ready to get it done and then continue to travel the rest of my days paying attention to my health instead of saying one day. Today is the day.

I'm surprised I rarely go over my points for the day and last week I had leftovers for the week. I thought it must be a fluke but this week is the same. I add in my half a cupcake or bite of donut and I'm still fine. It does help that Hub's is dieting too. Of course he just stops eating or eats meat. That did not work for me. I say it's not healthy and he says being 50 lbs overweight isn't healthy. Word.

Friends and WW

The message you send is that you don't have time for our chit chat, which is fine, but that tells us you aren't friends with us. Remember that. If you are so busy, so important that you aren't listening to our thoughts and concerns do not expect us to listen to yours.

I've been doing weight watchers for almost a month and I've been steadily losing. Here's what I've learned....
1- I used to think the whole point system was stupid. I didn't want to learn something so complicated when I understand calories. But then I joined and added the app and I don't need to 'learn' anything I just track and add and, whalah, it's working. I've always used the excuse I know what I'm supposed to be eating and not eating I just, to quote my dr, 'celebrate too much'. True but for some reason it just clicked this time. I've resolved to not enter one more new year having made no progress.
2- I love that I can eat/drink anything I want... in moderation. I've done Atkins and South Beach and whatever else came along and they all work but I hate saying no to a donut. It hurts Holtman's feelings when I turn my head. The beauty of WW is I can have a bite as long as I track it and don't continuously step out of the box (or into it as it may be).
3- I've never gone hungry. I knew this from others diets- we just eat way too much- but it's surprising to me how little I eat and my stomach isn't growling.

measure

I'm trying to pull together evidence to support the high school library and my job as a professional librarian. Not in response to anything recent so don't panic, I just know I need to be doing this in general as a professional. It's not like I can present test scores or adequate student progress so how do I measure or prove that my salary is well spent on a certified librarian. Today as I was reviewing some things students were pouring in and when I sat back down I thought here's the dialogue of the last 15 mins in the HS library.

I need a book
I need a book
can I renew
can I check this out
I don't know what to read
I don't like this
I'm thinking of doing my English project on like the end days or like the breakdown of the government- what do you have in here on that?
wanna see my grades
wanna see my drawing...
Thank you Mrs. Lovin

That last one made me tear up a bit. It's from the kid who comes in everyday. He does homework beside me at my desk. We check his grades and discuss what we are going to do about that. His artwork had some really personal stuff going on. I paused my work of trying to put my job on paper and poured over his art project he brought in just to show me. We talked about what was in there. As he walked away he muttered Thank You Mrs. Lovin. And I know it isn't just for doing my job. It's for paying attention. We all do it. I'm not the only one. I'm just trying to figure out how you put a price on that. How do I measure that? How do I include that? Rambling I know but it's my struggle lately. And I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to book talk and work collaboratively alongside teachers and students doing phenomenal work.

Conversation

Morning conversation with English teacher about today's YA author, censorship and reality...
I'm uncomfortable with the edginess of today's YA fiction but also thrilled that the writing has been elevated. What I worry about are the parents and administrators who are not readers regulating what we should be reading or allowing students to read. It's heartbreaking.

Guy student conversation about not liking YA but adult has stuff in it he shouldn't be reading... So therein lies the rub right? So YA authors have heard this complaint and upped the ante on their writing and then we censor it.

Guy student conversation about Winger and sequel- this is a kid just like me. He talks like me, he does stuff I think is funny. It's relatable. I've never read a book like this. That makes me want to sing but these are the books that make me worry about my job if a non reading administrator or parent picks up one of these and reads one edgy page.

Guy student who said The Lightening Thief was the first book he picked up and chose over video games. He smiled. Ahhh, really the best job in the world.

A girl reading a book I recommended- I hurried up on my English test today so I could read this it is soooo good!!!

I am so excited about going to the Country Living Fair on Saturday.  The first time I went, I came home and told Hubs- these are my people. It is so inspiring and beautiful, full of wonderful ideas and lovely items for sale and just perfect to take in all the sights. The food from a local food truck is healthy and unique and delicious. After going for the last few years I look for my favorite venders. They know how to style a booth. It's inviting and an experience.

I can't even explain how important and indepth our conversations in the library are.
Stephenie's classes are doing a project where they pick a topic and read nonfiction and fiction to support and explore their topic. This has led to amazing conversations from deep thinking students.

And so it begins...

First 2 days of school.... work days, but a baptism for sure.
Talked to an administrator today who sees the future of education way different than I do. Yikes.
People do not change. Maybe that's why I wonder if I will. Adults come in say they know I'm busy too and then continue to ask for something right now that can wait.
Love the teenager. He has made a bad choice and he is suffering for it. Painful to watch.
Gonna miss Summer Sonics....

I'm behind

Tuesday
9:30
Harbor overslept until 8 which means I overslept then went back to bed until almost 9:30. That's freakin' awesome since i haven't slept in forever.
let the dogs out, started laundry and made coffee
bible verses on the porch
text check in with Louisa and mom

no eggs... again

Yesterday I worked until 5 pulling the house back together. Then hubs called and needed some paperwork to run to a meeting so I showered and headed out to meet him. We dropped it off then had dinner at Donatos before stopping by the grocery for eggs. 100$ later forgot the eggs. Seriously.
It's just nice to spend time with him doing anything. Back home the 3 of us watched the last Blackish to get caught up and then a Fresh off the Boat before we headed to bed. Still reading Bossy Pants and it is hilarious. Lovin' it.

Steve

Sun: Got home last night from a week at Hilton Head Island. The boys had just left for an all night fishing tournament. They barely said hello before falling into bed...
So this Sunday is spent catching up on social media. And a Murder She Wrote marathon.

Fri: Harbor went to dicks last resort with friends. He won't tell me what his hat said...
He drove and did a great job. Last night he drove to Alex's in blue ash and brought him to yo's to go to Terry's turf club to celebrate his 17th birthday. The waitress asked mom her name when she took her order so when she came to harbor he said Steve. I love that kid seriously. Then when I handed my camera to Alex to take a pic for us he turned it around and took a selfie w us. That's friggin' hilarious. The whole ride there was loud and scary and fun. A great evening. Of course this is coming on the heels of Stella really scaring me to death. Wed night when I came home she had a hard time getting into the house. She was sick or hurt. So after a restless night we took her to the vet Thursday. She pulled back muscles and has early onset hip dysplasia. Poor girl. And I'm leaving for Hilton head.

Last Sunday at church communion was offered at anyone's desire to go forward. I wondered what our family of three would/should do when Harbor said should we go and lead us out. One of my most touching moments.

Sunday Funday

Last year's room was so perfect we should have expected disappointment. This year's is much smaller and the view is of the swamp again not the lake. But the sounds are just as spectacular. Last night the crickets and such were welcoming us with song!
It's Sunday morning and I'm starting over. Good morning Lord!
This morning the birds are giving a full concert. I have got to lose the extra weight it is absolutely ridiculous. Enough. Need a combination of restraint and exercise.
This is why Yo and I get along so well. We pick up the same clothes in a store. We duck into the same stores. We see a bar in a bookstore and we immediately order a drink.

Check your motives. John 3:11 Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God, whoever does evil has not seen God.
Eph 5:1 Be imitators of God.

blood...

Ugh! I had to have blood work done this morning which means I have to pee. On command. I am  a girl of routine. I get up. I go the bathroom. I let out the dogs. I fix coffee. I feed dogs. I do not like messing up that schedule so I did such and figured I could pee again later..... I proceeded to drink 40 oz of water and thought I might not be able to causing more stress. Then after all the hubbub I can't stop peeing!!

Taking today to clean up paperwork before classic book club. I had to stop for awhile to make watermelon salsa. I lllooovvveee it. Can't stop eating it.

Garage Sale

Returning from 4 days at Yolanda's. We set up a yard sale, managed it, tore it down, shopped, cooked, ate, crafted, worked in my planner, read magazines, cleaned her craft room and generally had a great time for 4 days straight.

We always seem to hit the same stores- Sam's, JoAnne's, Michael's, Half Price Books, gas, Kroger, Target,

I tried a new coffee shop- Awakenings in Hyde Park. One of my favorites- a caramel latte. Good stuff! I also tried their chocolate croissant; it was just OK.

I enjoyed Fusian twice in 4 days. The one in Kenwood with tuna and cucumber-lemon water and seaweed salad. Then I saw one, I can't remember the name, that was even better than both the sushi places we've eaten at. The cilantro is amazing added to the sushi.

Talked a lot about Hilton Head. Hoping for a good trip and good weather.

I'm definitely a lister. Getting ready for HHI trip I have about 3 lists going on. I'm constantly packing.

Proverbs

Going to work in the summer is so two sided. It's nice because I get to work uninteruppted and get things done I'm constantly trying to do during the year. But I don't want to be here. I haven't caught up on my household yet!

Proverbs 31:6
Give strong drink to the perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery not more.

Proverbs 31:15
She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.

July Already?!?!

It's ridiculous that it is July 7th and I'm making my 1st blog post of the month. During the school year I always think oh this summer I'll have time and then summer comes and I think where did the time go?!?

John and I kicked off July with a check in with our financial advisors. That was depressing. Then we went to Dorothy Lane Market for dinner and some groceries. John was a trouper at the hot dinner counter where you chose what you wanted then took it upstairs to reheat and enjoy. Really cool place. He even swung in Goodwill when I spotted it. Good time.

On the 2nd we went out for sushi with the Lansings and Williams. We miss those guys so much and need to get with them more.

On the 3rd I headed to Yo's for crafting and pool time. Margaret and Mom were there too. Then Mom Yo and I went to Lawrenceburg for a wine walk. Smitty was selling split the pot tickets for the Elks there. The music was good and so was the wine!

I spent the night and got in a good pool day on the 4th. Marina was so spooked by all the parties and fireworks I finally just came home and watched tv with John hoping to distract her. It didn't work so well.

Friends who help my being

The boys got home about 9 last night from a week long fishing tournament trip to Lake St Clair Michigan, unloaded soaked fishing gear, ate, went to bed and left at 5 this morning for Harbor's last Youth Bass Tournament of the year. Hoping to qualify for state. Yesterday I met some friends down at the Oakley Fancy Flea and then ran into some friends I haven't seen in forever. Their grandkids and Harbor played when they were young. Now all the kids are taller than us. Talking with them I am struck with gratitude once again that Harbor and John share this love of fishing. They have spent Harbor's life traveling and fishing the next spot, the next tournament. They watch fishing shows together, swamp fishing magazines, read aloud online fishing reports, shop online and travel to stores to scope out that special piece of equipment. What a rare blessing to stay so close during a time that could be so turbulent. And all the adult friends who have mentored Harbor along the way, these men have always treated Harbor as an equal and he has stepped up to that position. He is comfortable with adults, soaks in advice and loves a good story. They have told him the some of the same things we have but yet they hold more weight I think. Just counting my blessings this morning before I head out to another weigh in and cookout. Glad I get to go along for the ride....

Art and Joan.
At the Oakley Flea a guy ran up to me and said' you walked right by us'. It took me a minute but I recognized some church friends from the past. I loved these 2. We went to church with them, went to cookouts at their house, and just fellowshipped with them years ago. Churches ago.  We talked about the kids and grandkids, what we are doing these days and finally came around to church. We go in Blan they no longer go. These were major church workers.  They have the same complaint I've heard over and over again. They were overworked. People wouldn't stand around to talk, they rushed off. No one cared. Everyone is so busy. The music was boring, the messages not relevant, the church body kept shrinking. It felt like they were dying. People the church is struggling. It is possible to know Christ and not go to church but it is hard. We crave the fellowship of a body of believers. We talked for about an hour and I remembered why I loved these guys so much. They are so honest, transparent and funny! We had dinner not too long ago with another friend from the past and leaving that night I thought the same thing. The friends I went to the Oakley Flea to meet. These people get it. They are living life true and honest and they aren't afraid to tell you how they really feel. I want to strive to be that kinda gal. There is no drama with these people, no ulterior motives- they help my being.  They talk about real things, things that matter, not people. What a blessing to know such people and to call them my friends.

Also at the Flea I met Mallory, the wife of a former student. She is a designer. What a great gal. A delight in person as well as online. I stopped in a unique coffee house for a honey latte afterward and headed to Fusion sushi. I could eat here everyday. Loved it! Raw tuna seaweed roll with asparagus, cream cheese, avocado, carrot and cucumber, spicy mayo and sweet soy with a tempura topping. And edamame. Delish!

I stopped in the Montgomery Goodwill boutique and Kroger then headed home. A great day. Mainly spent alone and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I worked on downsizing and organizing my closet for the last week and geesh do I have alot of clothing. Didn't downsize much since I love my clothes but I organized and am continuing to work through wearing everything I own. It may take another year.

Last weekend John, Harbor and I went to a wedding and the boys left afterwards from there to go to Lake St Clair. That left me needing a ride. Jeremy and Mike were DJing so I rode with them. It's nice to know I've got friends who've got my back. Mike had my favorite drink made and kept delivering them to me, Jeremy kept coming over to chat. I love these 2. They are good guys. We talked real talk on the way home and I am reminded they need us. John and I need to step up and reconnect with these guys. They and their families need to see us, hear from us, laugh with us.

There is a new era coming for the Lovins. John will not be coaching football this fall. He's taking time off to focus on Harbor's fishing. I wondered many years ago what it must be like to go home on a Friday evening in the autumn and stay there. I've cheered every Friday night through high school and then attended as a coach's wife for decades. I've slacked off in the last few years. Not traveled to some away games, skipped if it was raining or snowing. But all in all Fall means high school football Friday nights and now it could mean anything else. Oh who am I kidding I'll probably curl up on the couch with a good book!

This whole gay marriage thing is crazy. Interesting the people I talk to in person, those I spend my time with, seem to agree with me. It is what it is. People have a right to choose. Not everyone is like you and you don't get to define God for them.  Facebook however is a different story. Hate and disappointment is flowing from the conservatives. I'm working out how I feel about this.

Missing my boys

The boys have been gone for 5 days and I miss them.
I'm trying very hard to budget.
The nice thing about online banking is I get to 'go along' on the boys trip with them. I get to see that they are eating, they've checked into the hotel, picked up supplies....
Reviewing More Hours in My Day and I can't believe how much of it I have implemented over the years. I organize my home this way. Manage it.
I've always been a list maker. A to doer. An organizer. A Planner Girl.

Currently Watching
Alias working on season 1
Arrested Development working on season 2
Midsomer Murders working on season

I've caught up on some shows...
Magnum Pi through season 2
Murder She Wrote
Psych through season 5
Wallander through season 1

SUMMER NIGHTS

Waking up at the Smith B&B this morning having stayed over after Fathers Day for a whole pool day. After getting up with the dogs at 7 scrolling through Instagram and getting sleepy again I drifted back to sleep until 9. Heaven.
Yesterday on the way here I ran into many obstacles!
Who needs a video game when you can drive from Fayetteville to Colerain?!?
On 131 a small deer the size of Stella ran across the road in front of me, in Milford cops were on both sides of the road acting weird and making me nervous, my seat heater kept kicking on automatically causing me to have to exit at Montgomery to figure out how to turn it off and then to beat it all on Cross County a SUV lost control in front of me and a semi was gaining speed behind me.. what to do?!?!? Then the SUV suddenly gained control and took the exit at about 70 miles an hour. GEESH!!!
Today I read Style by Kate Spade. Frankly it was a disappointment. It was informational but just blah. Nothing exceptional. I'll keep it laying around though to see some of the movies mentioned and songs mentioned.
So then I started reading The Video Club- a Memoir and I'm loving it.

smooth...

Missed getting up early enough for biscuits and eggs so the boy got a fruit smoothie instead. Which means I made a green smoothie with the left overs.

In years past when I travel with other people I like to add personal touches to enhance the trip. Post inspirational signs, plan out eateries or menus. Today I was thinking maybe of not doing that this year. Maybe they don't really enjoy it or care one way or the other. And then I realized I do it for me too so on with it. This is my vacation and I'll create it.

Groove thing

Getting into my groove...
Up, weighed, and fed the dogs, even the houseguest who promptly ate everyone's food when they left it unattended.
Porch and listening to nature: birds, dogs, crickets
Water and Instagram
Planning
Cleaned up to dos
Reading Longbourne and magazines and catalogues
Sorting photos

Yesterday I finally got the dishes and laundry caught up. That was step one and it took way too long.

Karma

Trying to focus on what I can do instead of what I can't do. A good lesson this week. Sam is here so I can't leave but I can
relax on the porch
get my house in order
catch up on laundry and dishes

This new planner obsession has really taken over. I guess all obsessions do....

I am amazed at how adults act. Some people will never cease to act childish and intentionally hurt people. The difference is how I react to it. I refuse to react or to allow their actions to make me a mean person. I will not retaliate I will ignore.

Girl Friday

It's Sam week. That means I don't leave my house all week. I've got big plans and relaxing plans and planning plans. Ahh but for now I'm kicking it off by sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee and catching up on social media.
Instagram √
Facebook √
Pinterest √

I'm throwing in a load of laundry every hour and getting all dishes cleaned and put away.
That's my goal for today.

Tomorrow I'll focus on the routine I'm trying to implement for summer...
Weigh
Girls out and fed
coffee on the porch with devotion
water
yoga

A thunderstorm is finally rolling in. We need the rain but both my boys are out fishing tonight so not real excited about a storm. The girls and I are hanging out on the porch until it gets here because it is supposed to storm for the next week everyday.

Pool day

Woke early to help Moms and Yo set up for crafters trunk sale hosted by Dorveda. Then shopped it. Scored some goods. Then dad and I went to a church sale. Scored more goodies. Then Goodwill 50% off day! Then Restore store more sales! Now back at pool reading Sherlock Tales.

SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER!

It's the first day of summer and already I can't sleep in. 6:15 and the pups are ready to get up and go.
Well time to plan out my next 10 weeks.... :):):):):):)

I weighed (too much) and vowed to watch that number go down every day. Enough. Top priority.
I took the girls out and skimmed Instagram.
I poured some fruit and water into my wide mouth ball jar and took the computer to the porch. I cleaned out my work email. I need to figure out if I can link my personal email to the computer and clean that out too.

Now onto facebook and pinterest.

Welcome to June

It is exhausting giving pep talks to everyone else when I feel like I need one myself. Didn't realize how tired, worn out, and just blah I felt until I came home and crashed. Ah well. We'll try again tomorrow. Tomorrow June starts and I really felt like that was going to energize me but no not yet because before the day could even get started, bam!, we had a 'meeting' that stunned everyone. Today I walked down to check on a coworker and heard crying. It's too much for us- the stress, the tension. And it doesn't feel like there is an end to it. But there is. I must hope that things can get better. They will.

Teagarden

Last night I happened upon Aurora Teagarden on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel. Very interesting. A librarian no doubt! How have I not heard of this?!?!?

teenagers

What I know about teenagers...
They like to write 'I was here' on everything. They like to leave their things everywhere, it's like they need to stake their claim to a space.

Winter movies

What a long strange road this winter has been. Seriously snowy and rainy and just wow. A whole week off of school, when has that happened last?

Watched Nick and Nora's The Infinite Playlist. I'm surprised this movie isn't a cult favorite with our students.
Also watched Great Expectations (2012). It is a good adaptation. Caught up on Walking Dead. It's taking some strange turns.

SUMMER PLAN!

Summer!

Get skinny. Drink green smoothies and water and eat eggs and meat and veggies and fruit. Walk the dogs everyday- sometimes twice. Do yoga and exercises on the back porch.

Budget organized and tracked. Goals set and monitored.

Clean house, garage and property thoroughly.

Decorate the porches. Front and back with what I find in the house and garage.

Catch up on Scrapbook 2015 project life, keep current and work backwards.

Schedule a crafternoon early and then schedule the next before leaving.

high school

Geesh. High School. Why do grown ups choose to act like children.

No one should get poopie because someone else was included out of kindness. It stinks that people act that way. Spread kindness people. Stop being childish and mean or it will and should come back to you. And if you do choose to do that, do not expect me to join in. I'm tired of it. It is not who I want to be so walk away from me and don't keep being irritated at me when I move on. Seriously irritated with this situation. You would be the first person to get your feelings hurt and yet you continue to TRY to hurt someone else's. Done. D.O.N.E. and as I recall this time last year I felt the same way so I guess it is time for a break. Again.

I'm resolving to spread kindness. Not judgement, not pettiness. I'm not sure what the world means but I'm going to fill it with kindness and love not more hurt and meanness.

Biggest Snow in Awhile

Went to bed late. Woke up early. Excitement for the day off? the coming snow storm? Getting Christmas stuff down ?!?! Weather guy says we haven't seen a snow storm like this since 5 years ago on Presidents' Day. We'll see.
I read the first 5 chapters of Revelation and took notes this time. Clearer with our recent Bible study conversations. Sitting at the table with Bible, coffee, pad of paper and candle is a great way to celebrate a day off. The snow is coming down...
I've been trying to keep up with my scrapbooking as the year progresses so cleaning up some past events this February.
Hubs made french toast while he and the boy wile away the morning watching fishing videos. Me- planner videos. Them- guys fishing.

I was stunned to hear Harbor stopped at the outlets with his father and went into the Kate Spade store to pick out a dress for Emma for her birthday. Stunned. We raised this kid right. And by we I mean me, Yo and mom. Wow. Stunned.

Vent Intent

Vent

How you treat me is how you view me. Is that your intent?
When you treat me poorly I take note and will not feel safe around you. I will choose not to be around you. Is that your intent? You are narrowing your circle. I am stepping outside.

People implying that they get to decide how I spend my time? What is up with that. You can see I am busy. It is not of your business what I am doing. Step away.

Your work is not appreciated is the message you send me when you interuppt me with trival things. Are you blind to the reality that I too have work to do?

We Can Scrap!

I wish the park ranger hadn't told us there was a family of bears. I keep looking in anticipation.

What a great weekend. Our set up was nice this year. Mom, You, Marg and I set our table up in and open square so you had a little more autonomy but could make eye contact with everyone.

Listening to YouTube My Favorites all weekend long.
Watching to Belinda talk about planners on YouTube.

Discipline

I'm feeling a little more with it today. I've been out of sorts. Lots of January/New Year planning I think has slowed me down, made me more introspective.

The biggest loser showdown started last Friday. I'm eating salad at lunch. Good actually. Then someone brought cupcakes so I ate that too. It's funny how someone can use the word 'lack of discipline' when referring to to my eating habits and then order a pizza.

My tribe

Stephenie shared a Facebook article not long ago about women over 40. You know your tribe. That was clear this morning.

Bub was hoping for a Dodge Neon SRT 4 for Christmas. Didn't happen. Now he is in car shopping nirvana. I enjoy listening to him dream.

Over Christmas break I decided I'm joining the Monday Morning w Coffee Working at Home Crowd. Yesterday cemented that goal.

Cleaning up pending posts ...
2013
The Year of the Keurig! We've had one at school for about a year and I eased into loving it. Last Christmas Hubs gave me one for home and I now use it about 4 times a day. Coffee, tea, you name it I use it often. Lovely.
Bub's Youtube video sensation. We know it wasn't from his amazing skill etc. but it was some intelligence to time that shot and luck that it went in. I'll take luck any day!

Listen

Listen. People want to know that you are listening.

Snow day..

On our snow day off Hubs and I watched Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit- not so great. I won't remember any of it. Luckily I cruised Facebook and Pinterest while watching.

This morning Hubs made eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy while I tried to salvage my cards I started for the card exchange. The cards didn't work so back to square one.

Jan 1

Happy New Year! Let's try to get this started off right.

Today Hub's left early to go look at a boat with a few guys. Bub's and I slept in. I enjoyed the morning by letting the girls out and putting their food out while I made a cup of coffee and turned on an episode of Magnum. A slow morning gives me time to check in with the peeps on Facebook and get inspired by Pinterest.

After I woke Bubs for practice I helped him make his bed and put on the pop tarts and poured the milk. Bub's plans on a few of boys coming home with him so I'm cleaning house. Again. Neverending.

Tomorrow mom and Yo are coming over to craft before Bub's basketball game. I'm getting the menu and list of crafts together. Making a grocery list for Hubs to pick up on his way home from practice.
