Webinars

Aug 4
Participating in webinars all day today. Should be interesting.

Goodbye September

Today I played in the studio and finished my September cards. I listened to podcasts about Amy Winehouse documentary and one about Do I Sound Gay. Guys who have a 'sound' are classified as gay but do girls have a sound like that?

Yesterday I finished Girl on the Train. Not a favorite. Very Gone Girlish which was also not my favorite. A page turner no doubt but I need to connect more with my books. Even my cozies I need more character in my characters.

BOOK CONVO

I love the anticipation of the students having a book conversation.
I love when I say oh this is sooo much better than the miniseries and he says, 'there's a mini series....'
Oh he wrote that? I thought it was just a movie! I love that movie! What else did he write?
Good talking to you...

I've been down the planner rabbit hole now for almost a year and here's what I know....

behind... no pun intended

I joined Weight Watchers Aug 31. After year's of saying I know what to do and how to eat I just sucked it up and joined. I do know but I overdo it. Often. It was time to get back on the healthy living wagon and drop some luggage. I'm using the point system that I thought was stupid and it's working. So there's that. It will be 2 weeks on Monday and I don't mind eating a little of what I want and stopping at that. I don't mind eating the salads for lunch and the diet soda. I'm ready to get it done and then continue to travel the rest of my days paying attention to my health instead of saying one day. Today is the day.

I'm surprised I rarely go over my points for the day and last week I had leftovers for the week. I thought it must be a fluke but this week is the same. I add in my half a cupcake or bite of donut and I'm still fine. It does help that Hub's is dieting too. Of course he just stops eating or eats meat. That did not work for me. I say it's not healthy and he says being 50 lbs overweight isn't healthy. Word.

Friends and WW

The message you send is that you don't have time for our chit chat, which is fine, but that tells us you aren't friends with us. Remember that. If you are so busy, so important that you aren't listening to our thoughts and concerns do not expect us to listen to yours.

I've been doing weight watchers for almost a month and I've been steadily losing. Here's what I've learned....
1- I used to think the whole point system was stupid. I didn't want to learn something so complicated when I understand calories. But then I joined and added the app and I don't need to 'learn' anything I just track and add and, whalah, it's working. I've always used the excuse I know what I'm supposed to be eating and not eating I just, to quote my dr, 'celebrate too much'. True but for some reason it just clicked this time. I've resolved to not enter one more new year having made no progress.
2- I love that I can eat/drink anything I want... in moderation. I've done Atkins and South Beach and whatever else came along and they all work but I hate saying no to a donut. It hurts Holtman's feelings when I turn my head. The beauty of WW is I can have a bite as long as I track it and don't continuously step out of the box (or into it as it may be).
3- I've never gone hungry. I knew this from others diets- we just eat way too much- but it's surprising to me how little I eat and my stomach isn't growling.

measure

I'm trying to pull together evidence to support the high school library and my job as a professional librarian. Not in response to anything recent so don't panic, I just know I need to be doing this in general as a professional. It's not like I can present test scores or adequate student progress so how do I measure or prove that my salary is well spent on a certified librarian. Today as I was reviewing some things students were pouring in and when I sat back down I thought here's the dialogue of the last 15 mins in the HS library.

I need a book
I need a book
can I renew
can I check this out
I don't know what to read
I don't like this
I'm thinking of doing my English project on like the end days or like the breakdown of the government- what do you have in here on that?
wanna see my grades
wanna see my drawing...
Thank you Mrs. Lovin

That last one made me tear up a bit. It's from the kid who comes in everyday. He does homework beside me at my desk. We check his grades and discuss what we are going to do about that. His artwork had some really personal stuff going on. I paused my work of trying to put my job on paper and poured over his art project he brought in just to show me. We talked about what was in there. As he walked away he muttered Thank You Mrs. Lovin. And I know it isn't just for doing my job. It's for paying attention. We all do it. I'm not the only one. I'm just trying to figure out how you put a price on that. How do I measure that? How do I include that? Rambling I know but it's my struggle lately. And I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to book talk and work collaboratively alongside teachers and students doing phenomenal work.

Conversation

Morning conversation with English teacher about today's YA author, censorship and reality...
I'm uncomfortable with the edginess of today's YA fiction but also thrilled that the writing has been elevated. What I worry about are the parents and administrators who are not readers regulating what we should be reading or allowing students to read. It's heartbreaking.

Guy student conversation about not liking YA but adult has stuff in it he shouldn't be reading... So therein lies the rub right? So YA authors have heard this complaint and upped the ante on their writing and then we censor it.

Guy student conversation about Winger and sequel- this is a kid just like me. He talks like me, he does stuff I think is funny. It's relatable. I've never read a book like this. That makes me want to sing but these are the books that make me worry about my job if a non reading administrator or parent picks up one of these and reads one edgy page.

Guy student who said The Lightening Thief was the first book he picked up and chose over video games. He smiled. Ahhh, really the best job in the world.

A girl reading a book I recommended- I hurried up on my English test today so I could read this it is soooo good!!!

I am so excited about going to the Country Living Fair on Saturday.  The first time I went, I came home and told Hubs- these are my people. It is so inspiring and beautiful, full of wonderful ideas and lovely items for sale and just perfect to take in all the sights. The food from a local food truck is healthy and unique and delicious. After going for the last few years I look for my favorite venders. They know how to style a booth. It's inviting and an experience.

I can't even explain how important and indepth our conversations in the library are.
Stephenie's classes are doing a project where they pick a topic and read nonfiction and fiction to support and explore their topic. This has led to amazing conversations from deep thinking students.

A favorite dress lately. Forgiving and dressy.
 A favorite skirt.
 Boring work outfit
 Lacey and artsy
The sandals are a favorite but looked odd with the long leggings.
